English Lecture:

"Big Data": Is there a role for the LIS Profession?

Dr. Bob Pymm
Associate Head, School of Information Studies,
Charles Sturt University

Date: 30 October 2014 (Thu)
Time: 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Venue: Activity Room 1, Hong Kong Central Library

"Big data" is the term used to describe massive amounts of information being captured - think about all the Tweets or Facebook postings every day; the video captured by street cameras or the petabytes of scientific data generated each day by projects such as the Hadron Collider. These massive amounts of data, quite unstructured, need to be managed in some way in order to make sure relevant information can be identified, extracted, exploited and preserved for the future. This talk will focus on what comprises big data and how it is being used before considering if there is a role for library and information professionals in managing these large datasets.
