JULAC Seminar held at City University

A JULAC seminar "Electronic Resources- Consortial Initiatives" was held at the SCOPE Lecture Theatre of the City University of Hong Kong on May 11, 2001.  These days when funding cuts become a fact of life, library consortia are all the more important, particularly so in the purchase of electronic resources which are "notorious" for their fearsome prices.  It came as no surprise that the event brought together many interested colleagues and the venue was filled to its brim.  Check out our group photo at http://www.cityu.edu.hk/lib/julac_photos.htm

There were three speakers in the one-day seminar: Ms. Diane Costello, Secretary and Executive Officer of the Council of Australian University Libraries (CAUL); Mr. Arnold Hirshon, Executive Director of New England's Library and Information Science Network (NELINET) and Mr. Ian Mowat, the University Librarian of the University of Edinburgh.  Each of the speakers set the scene by introducing the organizational structure of their consortia, the services they provided for their member libraries, the roles they played, and their involvement with other national and international consortial bodies.  The programme was both stimulating and well-balanced, having drawn together experts from different parts of the world.

Mr Colin Steele, University Librarian of the Australian National University, then led a lively panel discussion during which the floor interacted freely with the speakers.
