After months
of planning, the Second Millionth Volume Celebration was acclaimed by all
as a rousing success. On 9 May, a special management seminar was
held for 30 library administrators from 18 local and international libraries
led by Dr Michael Keller, Stanford University Librarian and publisher of
the Stanford University and Highwire presses.
The gala event, enjoyed by more than 350 guests, began with a lovely reception party. Welcoming remarks were provided by Dr Anthony Ferguson, Librarian; Professor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor Howell Tong; and Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Cheng Kai-ming. Dr Keller spoke about the development and future of academic libraries and a student, Gary Ko (LLB1), shared his personal feelings about the importance of libraries. The major address of the evening was given by Mrs Anson Chan, former Chief Secretary for Administration and HKU graduate (BA 1962). She traced her library experiences from her days as a student to the present time and also spoke about the importance of library cooperation.
The Second Millionth Volume Celebration signified the maturity, capability
and the readiness of the HKU Libraries to better serve the Hong Kong community.
