HKUST Library Celebrated the Opening of its Special Collections Room

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Library organized several events on 6 June to celebrate the completion of its Special Collections Room.  These events include an open house of the Special Collections Room, a Colloquium on Antique Maps and History of Science Special Collections and an exhibition on Antique Maps.

The Colloquium consisted of four lectures by these distinguished speakers:

  • Professor Zhang Longxi: "Maps, Poems and the Power of Representations"
  • Mr. Roderick Barron: "China in Maps: Columbus to Kangxi"
  • Professor Fung Kam Wing: "A Documentary Journey From al-Farghani and al-Battani to Christoph Clavius and Matteo Ricci (from the 9th to 17th Centuries)"
  • Mr. Jonathan Hill: "Beware of Greeks Bearing Gifts"

  •
These four lectures provide scholarly and specialist insights on the topics and are highly refreshing for either novices or experts.  If you are interested to view the full text of the lectures, please visit http://library.ust.hk/info/colloq/jun2002/   You will be surprised (pleasantly, of course) to find out the connection between antique maps and John Milton's most famous poem "Paradise Lost".  Also, don't miss the absolutely thrilling book thief story by Mr. Hill.  It's a real-life account.

The exhibition is titled "China in Maps: A Library Special Collection" and will run till October 15.  You can also enjoy it virtually at http://library.ust.hk/info/exhibit/maps-2002/
