The Hong Kong Library Association held its 43rd AGM on 11 December 2001 in the Prince Hotel. This year we had more than 90 members and guests joining our event. The President made a summary report on the various activities in 2001 with highlights on the trip to Taiwan, the Education and Career Forum, and the visits and seminars. Four new Council Members were being elected. The Meeting also voted in favour of establishing the category of Corresponding Members.
The highlight of the AGM was the keynote speech given by our honourable guest, Dr. Patrick Ho. Dr. Ho has been playing an active role in promoting cultural activities in Hong Kong and is currently the Chairman of the Arts Development Council. Dr. Ho shared with us his vision on libraries and library services, and believed that libraries would continue to be a focal point of human interaction in spite of the recent advances of the Internet and virtual libraries.
It was also our great honour to have Dr. Ho to present the certificates to graduates of the Certificate Course for Library Assistants.
In recognition of the life-long contribution of Dr. Kan Lai Bing to the library profession in Hong Kong, the Association was pleased to award her the title of Honorary Fellow. Dr. Kan is not only a prominent figure of the local library community, but also a well known librarian in the professional field worldwide. Dr. Kan was a founding member of the Association more than 40 years ago. Since then, she has been giving an extremely strong support to the Association. At the moment, she dedicates herself to promoting library education in Hong Kong. Dr. Kan received the honour amid the standing applause of our members and guests.
As in previous years, a wonderful buffet was served after the meeting. The AGM perfectly concluded the services of the Council and achievements of the Association in the year 2001.
